The Translational Hurd Lab Approaches Our Study of Substance Use Disorders With Empathy for Individuals’ Lived Experiences and Optimism for How Research Can Be Translated to Public Health Policy and Novel Treatments

Our goal is to improve the lives of individuals and communities impacted by substance use through conducting compassionate, participant-centered, and groundbreaking translational research that drives deeper neurobiological understanding, better care, and lasting recovery.

Our approach to addiction science is holistic, integrating rigorous neuropharmacological and molecular research, the psychological factors that influence substance use, as well as the development of community-integrated intervention across the life course. This focus allows us to understand the health impact of substance use during critical life stages, discover potential pathways to recovery, and reduce the stigma surrounding substance use while promoting resilience and empowerment in those affected by addiction.
